The Multimedia Tools section shown in the screenshot is part of the Install area of Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility, commonly called WinUtil. WinUtil is a PowerShell-based Windows management utility that combines application installation, Windows tweaks, troubleshooting, update management and other Windows configuration functions into one interface.

Instead of manually visiting the website of every program, downloading an installer, running it and repeating the process, WinUtil allows multiple applications to be selected from one interface and installed through supported package-management mechanisms.

The current WinUtil application database defines applications in a configuration file and associates them with categories such as Multimedia Tools. Application definitions can include package identifiers for WinGet and Chocolatey, along with the application's description, website and FOSS status.

This makes the Multimedia Tools section particularly useful when preparing a new Windows computer, rebuilding a PC, configuring a technician workstation or creating a standard software installation for multiple computers.

Official WinUtil documentation

Why Does WinUtil Have a Multimedia Tools Category?

A normal Windows installation provides basic multimedia functionality, but users frequently need considerably more functionality.

For example, Windows can play common audio and video files, but a technician or content creator may need advanced format support, audio editing, video transcoding, screen recording, image manipulation, RAW image viewing, ebook conversion or per-application audio management.

WinUtil therefore groups a collection of popular programs into its Multimedia Tools category.

The screenshot includes applications covering several different functions: music playback, video playback, codecs, image viewing, image editing, audio recording, video conversion, 3D graphics, screen capture, streaming, ebook management and text editing.

It is important to understand that you do not need to install everything in this section. Several programs perform overlapping jobs. A normal user should select the applications appropriate to their requirements.

The exact application catalogue can change as WinUtil is updated. The WinUtil application configuration is therefore a better authority for the current list than an old screenshot or tutorial.

Understanding the Green Corner Indicator

One noticeable feature in the screenshot is the green corner indicator appearing on applications such as Audacity, Blender, Calibre, EarTrumpet, GIMP, HandBrake, ImageGlass, MPC-HC, mpc-qt, mpv, nomacs, Notepad++, OBS Studio, ShareX and VLC.

This indicator is associated with FOSS — Free and Open-Source Software — highlighting.

WinUtil's application configuration contains a foss property for applications, and a WinUtil community explanation confirms that green highlighting is used to distinguish FOSS applications.

Therefore, the green indicator should not be interpreted as meaning "already installed," "recommended," "safe," "premium" or "selected."

It primarily identifies applications classified by WinUtil as open-source software.

Detailed Explanation of Each Multimedia Tool

AIMP – Music Player

AIMP is primarily an audio player designed for users who maintain local music collections.

It provides significantly more music-management functionality than a basic Windows media player, including playlists, multiple audio-format support, audio processing and a customizable interface.

WinUtil currently categorizes AIMP as a Multimedia Tool and provides package information for automated installation.

Best suited for: users who maintain large MP3, FLAC or other local audio collections.

Install it when: you want a dedicated music player.

Skip it when: VLC, foobar2000 or another player already handles your audio requirements.

Audacity – Audio Recording and Editing

Audacity is a popular open-source audio recording and editing application.

It can be used for recording microphones, trimming recordings, combining tracks, applying effects, adjusting volume, reducing unwanted sections and exporting audio into commonly used formats.

WinUtil identifies Audacity as a FOSS Multimedia Tool.

It is especially useful for creating podcasts, voice recordings, tutorials, training material and cleaned-up audio tracks.

Audacity is an editor, whereas AIMP and foobar2000 are primarily players. That distinction is important when choosing software.

Blender – 3D Graphics

Blender is far more than a simple multimedia player or editor. It is a complete open-source 3D creation environment.

It supports 3D modeling, sculpting, animation, rendering and other content-creation workflows. WinUtil describes it as an open-source 3D creation suite.

Blender can consume considerably more CPU, GPU, RAM and storage than lightweight multimedia utilities, particularly when rendering complex scenes.

For a normal office computer, Blender is unnecessary unless somebody specifically performs 3D work.

Calibre – Ebook Management

Calibre is designed for managing digital books.

It provides ebook library management, viewing, metadata management and format conversion capabilities.

It can be useful when managing EPUB and other ebook formats, transferring compatible content to ebook readers or maintaining a large electronic-book library.

It is not primarily a PDF editor and should not be installed merely for opening ordinary PDF documents.

EarTrumpet – Advanced Windows Audio Control

EarTrumpet extends Windows audio-management functionality.

Its major advantage is convenient control over individual applications and their audio output.

For example, a user may want a browser to use one audio device while another program uses a different output, or may want independent volume levels for communication software, browsers and media players.

For users frequently switching between speakers, Bluetooth audio devices, USB headsets and HDMI audio, EarTrumpet can make Windows audio management more convenient.

WinUtil classifies it as a FOSS Multimedia Tool.

foobar2000 – Lightweight Music Player

foobar2000 is another dedicated audio player.

It is particularly popular with users who prefer a lightweight interface and extensive control over their music playback environment.

AIMP and foobar2000 overlap considerably in purpose. Most users therefore need one rather than both.

Users wanting an attractive conventional music interface may prefer AIMP, whereas advanced audio users may prefer the flexibility of foobar2000.

GIMP – Image Editor

GIMP is an open-source raster graphics editor.

It can perform photo retouching, image composition, resizing, cropping, color adjustments, layer-based editing and many other image-manipulation operations.

WinUtil's current configuration identifies GIMP as an open-source Multimedia Tool.

GIMP is appropriate when Paint.NET or simple Windows image tools are not powerful enough.

It can be useful for website graphics, product photographs, knowledgebase screenshots, marketing graphics and general photo editing.

HandBrake – Video Transcoding and Compression

HandBrake is primarily a video transcoder.

Transcoding means converting video from one encoding or container configuration into another.

For example, a large video may need to be converted into a more efficient format for storage, web publishing or playback compatibility.

WinUtil describes HandBrake as an open-source video transcoder capable of converting video into widely supported codecs.

HandBrake is particularly useful for reducing video size, converting videos for specific devices, changing codecs and creating standardized video files.

It should not be confused with a full nonlinear video editor.

ImageGlass – Lightweight Image Viewer

ImageGlass is designed primarily for quickly viewing images.

Its purpose is different from GIMP or Paint.NET. Instead of providing a large editing environment, it concentrates on displaying many image formats through a relatively simple interface.

WinUtil describes ImageGlass as focusing on simplicity, speed and broad image-format support.

It can be a good alternative for users who do not like the default Windows image-viewing experience.

IrfanView – Fast Image Viewer and Batch Processor

IrfanView has been widely used on Windows as a lightweight image viewer.

Its major advantage is that it combines fast image viewing with useful processing capabilities.

For IT and office environments, its batch functions can be particularly useful when large numbers of images need resizing, renaming or conversion.

It occupies a middle ground between a basic viewer and a full graphics editor.

iTunes – Media and Device Ecosystem Tool

iTunes remains useful in certain Windows environments, particularly where users work with existing media libraries or compatible Apple-device workflows.

However, it should not automatically be installed on every computer.

If the computer has no requirement for the iTunes ecosystem, another dedicated music player will generally be sufficient.

K-Lite Codec Standard – Codec Package

A codec is software used to encode or decode audio/video data.

Sometimes a video file exists but cannot be played correctly because the required decoder is unavailable.

K-Lite Codec Standard packages multimedia playback components designed to improve compatibility with various media formats.

However, modern players such as VLC and mpv already contain extensive decoding capabilities. Consequently, a separate codec pack is not always necessary.

Installing unnecessary codecs can also complicate multimedia troubleshooting, so K-Lite should generally be installed because there is an actual requirement rather than simply because it appears in the list.

Media Player Classic – Home Cinema (MPC-HC)

MPC-HC is a lightweight Windows media player.

It is designed around the traditional Media Player Classic interface and is attractive to users who want fast playback without a large media-library interface.

WinUtil's application database describes MPC-HC as a free and open-source video/audio player.

For simple local video playback, MPC-HC and VLC are both strong choices, but installing both is optional rather than mandatory.

mpc-qt

mpc-qt stands for Media Player Classic Qute Theater.

It follows the lightweight media-player concept while using a modern Qt-based interface.

It is primarily aimed at users wanting straightforward local multimedia playback.

For an ordinary office deployment, there is little reason to install VLC, MPC-HC, mpc-qt and mpv simultaneously unless testing multiple playback engines is part of the requirement.

mpv – Advanced Minimalist Media Player

mpv is a powerful open-source media player with a deliberately minimalist user interface.

It is popular among advanced users because of its configurability, command-line capabilities and scripting potential.

For administrators, developers and power users, mpv can be attractive because multimedia playback can be integrated into automated workflows.

For inexperienced users wanting familiar buttons and menus, VLC or MPC-HC may be easier.

nomacs – Image Viewer

nomacs is another open-source image viewer.

WinUtil describes it as supporting common image formats as well as formats such as RAW and PSD.

It is therefore particularly useful for users working with photographs or graphics files that go beyond ordinary JPEG and PNG images.

ImageGlass, IrfanView and nomacs overlap considerably, so most systems need only one primary image viewer.

Notepad++ – Why Is a Text Editor Under Multimedia Tools?

Notepad++ may initially appear unusual in this section because it is a text and source-code editor rather than a traditional multimedia application.

Nevertheless, the current WinUtil application configuration categorizes Notepad++ under Multimedia Tools.

Notepad++ is extremely useful for technicians and developers because it supports syntax highlighting, multiple tabs, search and replace, plugins and editing of many text-based file types.

It is especially useful for configuration files, logs, scripts, HTML, CSS, PHP, JSON, XML and PowerShell-related work.

The category placement should therefore not be interpreted as defining Notepad++ as multimedia software; it is simply where WinUtil currently places the application.

OBS Studio – Screen Recording and Live Streaming

OBS Studio is one of the most powerful applications in this group.

It supports real-time audio/video capture, multiple scenes, source mixing, screen capture, camera capture and live streaming.

WinUtil identifies OBS Studio as free and open-source software for recording and live streaming.

OBS is excellent for recording software demonstrations, creating technical tutorials, recording training sessions, producing YouTube videos and live-streaming presentations.

However, recording and encoding can consume substantial CPU or GPU resources depending on resolution, frame rate and encoder settings.

Paint.NET – Image Editing

Paint.NET provides image-editing functionality in an interface that many Windows users find easier to approach than more advanced graphics applications.

It is useful for cropping screenshots, resizing images, adding text, working with layers and performing routine image corrections.

For straightforward office and technical documentation work, Paint.NET may be sufficient without installing a larger editor.

ShareX – Screenshots and Screen Capture

ShareX is much more powerful than a basic screenshot application.

It can capture full screens, individual windows, regions and scrolling content, and it provides extensive post-capture and workflow functionality.

For IT professionals, technical writers and knowledgebase administrators, ShareX is particularly valuable because screenshots are frequently needed for documentation and troubleshooting.

It can substantially reduce the time required to capture, crop, annotate and process screenshots.

WinUtil marks ShareX as a FOSS application in its interface/database.

VLC Media Player

VLC is one of the most practical general-purpose applications in the Multimedia Tools group.

It can play a very broad range of audio and video formats and is commonly used as an alternative to Windows' built-in media applications.

For a normal workstation where only one third-party multimedia player is required, VLC is often enough.

Users requiring a minimalist player may instead prefer MPC-HC or mpv, while dedicated music enthusiasts may choose AIMP or foobar2000.

How WinUtil Installs These Applications

WinUtil does not need to contain the complete installer for every application.

Its application database stores package information, including package-manager identifiers. WinUtil's architecture supports both WinGet and Chocolatey for application installation.

Conceptually, the process is:

WinUtil GUI → Selected application → Application definition → Package manager → Package source → Application installation

This is one of WinUtil's major advantages.

Instead of manually searching for 10 application websites, a technician can select the required programs and start the installation process centrally.

The official guide states that users can select multiple applications and WinUtil will process them sequentially while displaying installation progress.

How to Install Multimedia Applications Using WinUtil

The normal workflow is:

Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell with administrative privileges.
Launch WinUtil using the current command provided by its official documentation.
Open the Install tab.
Locate Multimedia Tools.
Select only the applications required.
Click Install/Upgrade Selected.
Allow WinUtil to process the selected packages.
Monitor the progress/status area for installation results.
Launch the installed programs normally from the Windows Start menu.
Configure file associations and application-specific preferences afterward if required.

The current official documentation lists Windows 11, PowerShell 5.1 or later, administrator access and an Internet connection among WinUtil's requirements. It also notes that Windows 10 is no longer supported by current WinUtil versions.

Which Multimedia Applications Should a Normal Windows User Install?

Installing every application in the screenshot would usually be unnecessary.

A practical general-purpose setup might consist of VLC for multimedia playback, IrfanView or ImageGlass for image viewing, ShareX for screenshots, and Paint.NET or GIMP when image editing is required.

A content creator might instead add Audacity, OBS Studio, HandBrake, GIMP and possibly Blender.

An advanced multimedia workstation could additionally use mpv, foobar2000, Calibre, specialized codec components and other applications according to actual workflow requirements.

The principle is simple:

Install software according to function, not merely because it is available.

Avoid Installing Too Many Applications That Perform the Same Job

One common mistake when using bulk software installers is selecting almost everything.

Consider the overlap.

AIMP, foobar2000, VLC, MPC-HC, mpc-qt and mpv can all perform some form of media playback.

ImageGlass, IrfanView and nomacs are primarily image viewers.

GIMP and Paint.NET overlap in image-editing functionality.

VLC and K-Lite/MPC-HC may overlap in codec and playback requirements.

Installing every alternative does not necessarily make Windows more capable. It can instead create duplicate Start-menu entries, additional update mechanisms, competing file associations and unnecessary disk consumption.

For business computers, standardization is generally preferable.

Recommended Combinations for Different Users

WinGet vs Chocolatey in WinUtil

WinGet and Chocolatey are Windows package-management systems.

A package manager makes software deployment more systematic because applications can be referenced by package identifiers rather than requiring technicians to manually browse websites and download installers.

WinUtil's architecture checks and works with these package-management mechanisms, and its application configuration can contain both WinGet and Chocolatey package identifiers.

This also makes WinUtil useful for repeated workstation deployments.

For example, instead of maintaining a folder containing potentially outdated installers for VLC, Audacity, GIMP, OBS Studio and other programs, an administrator can use package-manager-based deployment to obtain current packages when setting up the machine.

Security Considerations

Convenience should not replace normal software-deployment security practices.

WinUtil itself should be obtained and launched according to its official documentation. Administrators should understand that running WinUtil with elevated privileges gives it the ability to make system-level changes.

Likewise, package definitions can evolve over time.

Before deploying software across business systems, IT administrators should verify the application, publisher, licensing requirements and suitability for the organization.

This is especially important for commercial environments because free to download, freeware, and open-source software do not automatically mean identical licensing conditions.

WinUtil for IT Technicians

The Multimedia Tools section becomes especially useful when technicians repeatedly configure new Windows computers.

Suppose an organization requires every technician workstation to contain VLC, IrfanView, ShareX, Notepad++, Audacity and OBS Studio.

Without automation, each computer requires multiple website visits and installation procedures.

With WinUtil, these applications can be selected from a centralized interface.

WinUtil is also designed to support repeatable configuration and automation scenarios, making it more than simply a graphical software-download directory.

For IT departments, this can help create a more consistent software baseline.

Troubleshooting Multimedia Application Installation

If an application fails to install through WinUtil, first verify Internet connectivity and confirm that WinUtil itself is current.

If WinGet is malfunctioning, WinUtil's documentation recommends using its WinGet repair/reinstallation functionality and then retrying the installation.

It can also be useful to check whether the application is already installed, whether another installation is pending, whether Windows requires a reboot, whether endpoint security software blocked the installation, and whether the package identifier has changed.

An installation failure does not necessarily indicate that the multimedia application itself is defective. The failure may occur at the package-manager, repository, network, permission or installer level.

Advantages of the WinUtil Multimedia Tools Section

The primary advantage is centralization.

A single interface provides access to many commonly used Windows applications. It reduces manual searching, makes multi-application setup faster and allows technicians to create a more repeatable deployment process.

The use of package managers also makes installation and subsequent upgrading easier than maintaining a collection of manually downloaded installers.

The FOSS indicator is another useful feature because it allows users to quickly recognize applications classified as free and open source.

Limitations

WinUtil should not be treated as a replacement for understanding the applications being installed.

It does not mean every application shown is required, nor does inclusion automatically make one application superior to another.

Application availability, package identifiers, versions and categories can also change as WinUtil evolves.

The screenshot therefore represents the available selection at a particular point in time rather than a permanent software catalogue.

Conclusion

The Multimedia Tools section of WinUtil is essentially a centralized application-deployment catalogue covering media players, audio editors, image viewers, graphics editors, screen-capture utilities, video transcoders, streaming software, ebook tools and related applications.

Its real value is not simply that applications such as VLC, GIMP, Audacity, OBS Studio, HandBrake, ShareX and Blender are available. The important advantage is that WinUtil connects a convenient GUI to package-management and configuration mechanisms, making software deployment faster and more repeatable. WinUtil's architecture stores application definitions in configuration data and integrates with WinGet and Chocolatey for installation.

For most Windows users, installing every available multimedia application is unnecessary. A better strategy is to select one application for each required job and add specialized software only when needed. For IT technicians, this approach produces cleaner Windows installations, fewer overlapping programs, easier maintenance and a more standardized workstation configuration.
