A web browser is one of the most important applications on a modern Windows computer. For many users, almost everything—from email, banking and accounting portals to Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, cloud applications and remote-management consoles—is accessed through a browser.

The screenshot above shows the Browsers category in Chris Titus Tech's Windows Utility, commonly called WinUtil. WinUtil provides a convenient interface for installing applications and performing Windows configuration and maintenance tasks. Its current documentation describes the Install tab as a way to select and install applications, while its application definitions can contain WinGet and Chocolatey package identifiers.

Brave, Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Firefox, Firefox ESR, Floorp, Helium, LibreWolf, Mullvad Browser, Tor Browser, Ungoogled Chromium, Vivaldi, Waterfox and Zen Browser.

At first glance, it may look like these applications all perform the same job. Technically, however, there are major differences involving rendering engines, privacy, telemetry, extension support, account synchronization, enterprise management, update models and anti-fingerprinting technologies.

This article explains those differences.


What Is Chris Titus Tech WinUtil?

WinUtil is an open-source Windows utility maintained by the Chris Titus Tech community. It combines several common Windows administration activities into one graphical interface, including application installation, Windows tweaks, fixes, update management and Windows configuration.

The current project describes its purpose as streamlining application installation, debloating/tweaking Windows, troubleshooting problems and configuring Windows Update.

The Install section is particularly useful after:

  • installing Windows on a new PC,
  • reinstalling Windows,
  • preparing multiple office computers,
  • setting up a technician's machine,
  • building a testing environment,
  • preparing a development workstation.

Instead of manually visiting 10–20 websites and downloading installers individually, administrators can select several applications and let the utility handle installation.

Important compatibility note

Current WinUtil documentation lists Windows 11 as the supported operating system and states that Windows 10 is no longer supported following its October 14, 2025 end-of-support date.


Understanding Browser Engines First

Before comparing the browsers, it is important to understand that 15 browser names do not mean 15 completely independent browser technologies.

Most of them ultimately belong to two major technical families.

Chromium / Blink Family

Chromium is Google's open-source browser project and forms the foundation for many modern browsers. The Chromium project describes itself as an open-source project designed to provide a safer, faster and more stable web experience.

Chromium-based browsers normally use:

Because Chromium has such a large presence on the web, Chromium-based browsers generally provide excellent website compatibility.


Firefox / Gecko Family

The second major family is based on Mozilla Firefox.

There is therefore no universally "best" browser. The correct choice depends on the environment.


1. Brave Browser

Brave is a Chromium-based browser focused heavily on privacy.

Brave confirms that its desktop browser is built on Chromium while modifying the Chromium code to remove or change components related to privacy and telemetry.

Important features

Brave includes:

  • tracker blocking,
  • advertisement blocking,
  • fingerprinting protection,
  • HTTPS-related protections,
  • Chromium extension compatibility,
  • private browsing,
  • configurable privacy controls.

Because it is Chromium-based, most websites designed for Chrome work normally in Brave.

Advantages

  • Strong privacy configuration out of the box

  • Supports most Chromium extensions
  • Built-in blocking reduces dependency on extensions
  • Good option for users moving from Chrome

Possible disadvantages

Some users may not want additional Brave-specific components and services. These can usually be disabled or configured.

Interestingly, WinUtil itself includes an advanced Brave Browser – Debloat tweak designed to disable various optional Brave features such as Rewards, Wallet, VPN and AI Chat.

Recommended for

Users wanting Chrome-like compatibility with stronger default privacy controls.


2. Google Chrome

Google Chrome is probably the most familiar option in this list.

Chrome is Google's commercial browser built using the Chromium project.

One of its biggest advantages is integration with Google's ecosystem.

Signing into Chrome can synchronize information such as:

  • browsing history,
  • tabs,
  • extensions,
  • settings,
  • addresses,
  • payment information.

Google documents these synchronization capabilities through Chrome Sync.

  • Google Account synchronization
  • Easy user migration
  • Broad corporate application compatibility

Disadvantages

  • Greater Google ecosystem integration than privacy-focused alternatives
  • Can consume significant memory with many tabs/extensions
  • Background processes can increase system resource usage
  • Not the preferred choice for users trying to minimize Google services

Recommended for

General users, businesses and organizations heavily using:

Gmail, Google Workspace, Google Drive, Google Meet and other Google services.


3. Chromium

Chromium is the open-source browser project behind Chrome and many other browsers.

It should not simply be considered "Chrome without a logo."

Chromium is the underlying open-source browser platform from which Google and other vendors build their products.

Advantages

  • Open-source
  • Excellent web compatibility
  • Useful for browser testing
  • Valuable to developers
  • Forms the foundation for many browsers

Disadvantages

Depending on the distribution/build:

  • update mechanisms may differ,
  • proprietary media codecs may differ,
  • account synchronization may differ,
  • DRM support may differ.

Recommended for

Developers, testers and technical users who specifically want Chromium rather than Google's Chrome product.


4. Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft's Chromium-based browser and the standard browser supplied with modern Windows.

Its strongest advantage is its deep integration with the Microsoft ecosystem.

This makes Edge particularly practical in environments using:

  • Microsoft 365,
  • Microsoft Entra ID,
  • OneDrive,

Firefox ESR stands for:

It is particularly important for IT administrators.

Standard Firefox receives major feature releases much more frequently. ESR follows a slower major-release cycle while continuing to receive security updates.

Mozilla currently describes Rapid Release as receiving major updates roughly every four weeks, while ESR receives major releases roughly annually, with security and other maintenance updates in between.

Why ESR exists

Imagine a company running:

  • browser-based ERP,

  • internal web software.

A major browser UI or behavioral change every few weeks could require repeated testing.

7. Floorp

Floorp is a Firefox-based browser emphasizing customization and productivity.

Floorp therefore targets a different audience than standard Firefox.

8. Helium Browser

Helium is one of the newer browsers shown in WinUtil.

It is a Chromium-based, privacy-oriented browser derived heavily from the ungoogled-Chromium ecosystem. Its project describes it as Chromium-based and privacy-first.

Its current website highlights:

  • third-party cookie blocking,

An interesting architectural difference is that Helium removes direct dependencies on Google services. Its current documentation also says that it does not yet provide browser data synchronization and does not support Widevine DRM, meaning some DRM-protected streaming services may not work.

Technical users interested in experimenting with a newer, privacy-oriented Chromium browser.

For mission-critical corporate deployments, administrators should evaluate its update lifecycle, application compatibility and management requirements before standardizing on it.


9. LibreWolf

LibreWolf is essentially a privacy-hardened Firefox derivative.

The project describes itself as an independent customized version of Firefox focused on:

privacy, security and user freedom.

It modifies numerous Firefox defaults to reduce:

  • fingerprinting,
  • unnecessary connections,

10. Mullvad Browser

Mullvad Browser is particularly interesting technically.

It was developed through collaboration between Mullvad VPN and the Tor Project. Its purpose is to provide Tor Browser-style anti-fingerprinting protections without routing browser traffic through the Tor network.

An easy way to understand it is:

Mullvad describes its browser as having:

Important misconception

Installing Mullvad Browser does not automatically make your IP address anonymous.

The browser can be used with or without a VPN. Without one, your normal network connection still exposes your public IP to websites.

  • reducing browser uniqueness.

11. Tor Browser

Tor Browser has a fundamentally different purpose from Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Its primary goal is anonymity.

Traffic is routed through the Tor network, making it substantially more difficult for websites to determine the user's original IP address.

Tor Browser also incorporates sophisticated fingerprinting defenses.

The Tor Project documents protections including:

Recommended for

Tor Browser should therefore not be compared with Chrome purely by speed. They solve different problems.


12. Ungoogled Chromium

Ungoogled Chromium attempts to provide the Chromium experience while removing dependencies on Google web services.

The project describes itself as:

It attempts to remove or disable:

Some conveniences associated with Chrome may disappear.

13. Vivaldi

Vivaldi takes another approach.

Instead of being minimal, it focuses heavily on customization and productivity.

Vivaldi uses Chromium as its foundation and therefore maintains strong website and Chrome-extension compatibility.

Typical features include advanced:

  • workspaces,

One technical distinction worth understanding is that Vivaldi is not entirely open-source under one unified license. Chromium and many backend portions are open-source, while its desktop UI layer is proprietary.

14. Waterfox

Waterfox is another Firefox/Gecko-based browser.

Its current project describes it as a privacy-focused, customizable browser with telemetry removed and built-in blocking functionality. It remains compatible with Firefox WebExtensions.

Because it is Firefox-based, it can also use Firefox extensions.

Chrome vs Chromium: What Is the Difference?

This causes considerable confusion.

Think of it this way:

What Is Browser Fingerprinting?

Most people understand cookies, but browser fingerprinting is less obvious.

A website may observe characteristics such as:

  • screen dimensions,
  • browser version,
  • operating system,
  • language,
  • installed fonts,
  • graphics capabilities,
  • WebGL behavior,
  • canvas rendering,
  • timezone,
  • hardware characteristics.

Combining these characteristics can potentially create a relatively unique fingerprint.

The Tor Project describes browser fingerprinting as collecting browser characteristics to make an educated determination about a browser/device's identity.

Deleting cookies therefore does not necessarily eliminate every tracking technique.


Which Browser Is Best for Business?

For normal corporate environments, the strongest practical choices are usually:

Microsoft-oriented company

Microsoft Edge

Especially where Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune and Microsoft services dominate.

Google Workspace company

Google Chrome

Google account and Chrome synchronization make deployment convenient.

Organization wanting an alternative engine

Firefox

Organization requiring slower feature changes

Mozilla specifically positions ESR for organizations requiring longer-term stability and controlled deployments.


Which Browser Is Best for Windows RDS or Terminal Servers?

Browser selection becomes especially important on:

  • Windows Server,
  • Remote Desktop Services,
  • virtual desktops,
  • multi-user terminal servers.

A browser may launch multiple processes for:

  • tabs,
  • extensions,
  • GPU acceleration,
  • networking,
  • rendering,
  • service workers,
  • background applications.

Consequently, 20 users running 10 tabs each can create hundreds of browser processes.

For RDS environments, administrators should evaluate:

RAM consumption → CPU consumption → profile size → cache size → extension count → background processes → update behavior → Group Policy support.

A browser that performs perfectly on a 32 GB desktop may behave very differently when 20 users simultaneously run it on an RDS server.


Does a Privacy Browser Automatically Use Less RAM?

No.

Privacy and resource consumption are separate issues.

A privacy-focused browser may still consume substantial RAM if the user opens:

  • 30 tabs,
  • several web applications,
  • WhatsApp Web,
  • Gmail,
  • YouTube,
  • accounting portals,
  • multiple extensions.

Modern browsers intentionally use multiple processes for security and stability.

Therefore seeing many browser processes in Task Manager is not automatically evidence of a problem.


Why Do Browsers Use Multiple Processes?

Modern browsers separate workloads.

Extensions can be extremely useful, but every extension introduces additional code into the browser.

Extensions can potentially access:

  • tabs,
  • website data.

Administrators should therefore avoid installing unnecessary extensions.

A browser with ten questionable privacy extensions may actually be less trustworthy than a browser with strong built-in privacy features.


Chromium Extensions vs Firefox Extensions

Chromium browsers generally use extensions compatible with the Chrome extension ecosystem.

Examples include:

Firefox-derived browsers generally use Firefox WebExtensions.

Examples include:

  • Firefox
  • Floorp

Browser forks may change extension support, so compatibility should always be verified before corporate deployment.


Why Browser Updates Are Extremely Important

Browsers process untrusted internet content continuously.

That makes browser vulnerabilities particularly dangerous.

Security vulnerabilities may occur in:

  • JavaScript engines,
  • graphics libraries,
  • media decoders,
  • WebAssembly,
  • networking components,
  • browser extensions,
  • sandbox mechanisms.

Therefore:

Never disable browser security updates simply to prevent interface changes.

For business environments where frequent feature updates are undesirable, use a controlled enterprise release model such as Firefox ESR rather than freezing an outdated browser.


How WinUtil Installs Browsers

WinUtil's application configuration supports package identifiers such as WinGet and Chocolatey entries. Its documented application structure can contain fields including winget, choco, description, category and official link.

This is much more convenient when preparing multiple applications on a fresh Windows installation.


How to Run WinUtil

Current official instructions use an elevated Windows Terminal or PowerShell session and the stable launch command:

Select the required browser and run the installation action.

Security note for administrators

irm ... | iex means PowerShell retrieves remote script content and immediately executes it.

That is convenient, but organizations with strict security policies should review the project/source and deployment method before executing remotely downloaded scripts with Administrator privileges.

The same principle applies to any PowerShell project—not specifically WinUtil.


Should You Install Multiple Browsers?

Yes. Having two browsers can actually be useful.

For example:

Primary browser: Edge
Secondary browser: Firefox

or:

Primary browser: Brave
Secondary browser: Firefox

This gives you two independent browser families.

If a website behaves incorrectly in Chromium, Firefox provides a useful compatibility test.

For technicians and developers, having at least:

one Chromium browser + one Firefox/Gecko browser

is particularly useful.

Simple and highly compatible.

Privacy-conscious user

Brave + Firefox

Important Security Recommendations

Regardless of which browser you select:

  1. Keep it updated.
  2. Remove unnecessary extensions.
  3. Use a reputable password manager.
  4. Enable multi-factor authentication for important accounts.
