NGO Darpan, an initiative by NITI Aayog under the Government of India, aims to maintain transparency, accountability, and authenticity of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) functioning in the country. As part of the registration process, NGOs are required to provide details of a Witness who confirms the legitimacy of the applicant submitting the information on the portal. This requirement acts as a safeguard against impersonation and fraudulent activities.
A Witness in NGO Darpan registration is an independent individual who verifies that the applicant registering the NGO is a genuine representative. The Witness should not be an office bearer or connected to the NGO’s executive committee. Their role is limited to verifying identity and authenticity of the applicant at the time of registration.
The government collects essential information such as:
Full Name
Date of Birth
Gender
Parent Details
Aadhaar Number
Contact Information
Address Details
This helps ensure:
Proper KYC verification
Traceability in case of compliance checks
Prevention of fraudulent registrations
Transparent accountability for NGO records
A Witness does not hold any financial, administrative, or operational responsibility in the NGO. Their involvement ends once the registration is completed. They are not accountable for:
Financial transactions of the NGO
Misuse of government grants
Legal disputes or compliance failure
Activities conducted by the organization
Only in rare cases can a Witness be approached for verification if the information they confirmed is later found to be deliberately false.
Witness may provide a simple self-declaration through email stating that:
Their role is restricted only to identity verification
They do not have any legal or financial responsibility
They are not associated with the NGO operations
This electronic submission acts as valid authentication for compliance purposes and does not require a physical signature.
The Witness requirement is an important component of the NGO registration process under NGO Darpan. It promotes authenticity and prevents unauthorized individuals from filing applications. At the same time, it ensures that the Witness does not carry any burden of legal or monetary liabilities related to the NGO’s functioning.
By understanding this role clearly, individuals can confidently provide their details as a Witness for NGO Darpan registration.
