Acer Nitro gaming laptops are packed with performance features for gamers, and one of them is the Windows Key Lock function. This feature prevents the accidental pressing of the Windows key during gaming, which would otherwise minimize the game or interrupt gameplay.
However, after a BIOS update, this gaming mode may automatically enable itself, resulting in the Windows key not working when you try to open the Start menu or use keyboard shortcuts like Win + R or Win + E.
If you are facing this issue and all keys work except the Windows key, don’t worry. This is a common situation and can be easily fixed using simple steps.
After a BIOS update, Acer Nitro laptops may:
Enable Gaming Mode
Activate Windows Key Lock
Prevent the Windows key from functioning in normal mode
This is a hardware-level lock, not a software issue. The system disables Windows key presses to enhance uninterrupted gaming experience.
Follow the steps below to unlock the Windows key:
Most Acer Nitro models allow unlock using:
Fn + Windows Key
Press these keys together once → Your Windows key should start working immediately.
Some Nitro keyboards have a Gaming Mode or Win Lock LED.
If it is ON, toggle it using:
Fn + F10 (on some models)
If the shortcut doesn't work, then:
Restart the laptop
Press F2 repeatedly to enter BIOS
Look for:
Windows Key Lock
Gaming Mode
Set it to Enabled (meaning Windows key allowed)
Save changes (F10) and restart
If you didn’t find the above option:
Go to EXIT menu
Select Load Setup Defaults
Press F10 to Save & Exit
This resets the setting causing the lock.
Try:
Press Ctrl + Esc → Should open Start Menu if Windows key is the only issue
Try Win + R, Win + E shortcuts again
The Windows key not working on Acer Nitro laptops after a BIOS update is usually not a driver or operating system problem. It is caused by the Windows Key Lock mode, which is a gaming protection feature.
By simply pressing Fn + Windows Key, you can toggle the lock and restore full keyboard functionality.
If the issue persists, checking BIOS settings or resetting the BIOS will resolve it.
✔ Problem Cause: Windows Key Lock enabled
✔ Solution: Fn + Windows Key (or Fn + F10)
You are ready to continue working and gaming without interruption!
