How to Configure Yahoo Mail in Microsoft Outlook (Updated Step-by-Step Guide)

Configuring Yahoo Mail in Microsoft Outlook is fully supported, but the process is slightly different because Yahoo requires Enhanced Security Login. This means that Outlook cannot use your normal Yahoo password. Instead, you must create an App Password inside Yahoo's Security settings.

Below is the 100% accurate method based on current Yahoo layout.

? Step 1: Open Yahoo Account Security Settings

  1. Log in to your Yahoo Mail account from a browser.

  2. Click your Profile Icon (top right).

  3. Select Account Info.

  4. On the left panel, click Security Settings or Account Security.

    • (Yahoo may ask you to re-enter your password.)

? Step 2: Generate an Outlook App Password (Mandatory)

Outlook IMAP requires a Yahoo App Password, otherwise login will fail.

  1. Inside Account Security, scroll to Linked Apps & Website Logins.

  2. Click Generate App Password.

  3. Choose Outlook Desktop OR Other App.

  4. Yahoo generates a 16-character special password.

  5. Copy the password β†’ you will use this in Outlook instead of your Yahoo login password.

? Note: If this option is not visible, turn on 2-step verification, then refresh the page.

? Step 3: Verify IMAP Access Is Enabled

  1. Go to Yahoo Mail inbox.

  2. Click Settings (βš™οΈ) β†’ More Settings.

  3. Click Mailboxes.

  4. Select your Yahoo account.

  5. Ensure IMAP access is enabled (it is usually ON by default).

? Step 4: Add Yahoo Mail to Outlook

Open Outlook β†’
Go to File β†’ Add Account

Enter your Yahoo email β†’ click Connect

When asked for a password:
? Paste the App Password you generated from Yahoo.

Outlook will auto-detect settings.
If manual setup is required, use the settings below.

? Step 5: Manual IMAP/SMTP Settings for Yahoo Mail

Incoming Mail (IMAP)

  • Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

  • Port: 993

  • Security: SSL/TLS

  • Authentication: Password (App Password)

  • Username: Full Yahoo Email Address

Outgoing Mail (SMTP)

  • Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com

  • Port: 465 (Recommended)

  • Security: SSL/TLS

  • Authentication: Yes (same credentials)

  • Username: Full Yahoo Email Address

  • Password: App Password

? Step 6: Complete Setup

  • Outlook will test the connection.

  • Once verification is completed, your Yahoo inbox, sent mail, folders, and contacts will sync.

βœ” Important Notes

  • Normal Yahoo password will NOT work with Outlook.

  • App Password is one-time generated but can be revoked anytime.

  • If emails not syncing, double-check:

    • IMAP is ON

    • App Password is correct

    • SSL/TLS is selected

? Final Summary

Yahoo Mail works perfectly in Outlook when configured correctly. The key is using the App Password and the correct IMAP/SMTP settings. Once set, the sync is fast, stable, and secure.
