Outlook Not Asking for New Password After Password Change or App Password Creation – Causes and Complete Fix

Sometimes after changing an email password or creating an App Password, Microsoft Outlook continues using the old credentials and does not prompt for a new password. As a result, users may experience synchronization errors, sending/receiving failures, or repeated login problems.

This issue is commonly caused by cached credentials stored in Windows, outdated authentication tokens, or profile configuration problems.

This article explains the technical reasons behind the problem and provides step-by-step solutions to resolve it.

Why Outlook Does Not Ask for a New Password

Microsoft Outlook stores login credentials in the Windows Credential Manager to avoid repeated login prompts.

When the email password is changed or an App Password is generated, Outlook may continue using the previously saved credentials. Because of this cached authentication, Outlook does not ask the user to enter the new password.

Common reasons include:

  1. Cached credentials stored in Windows Credential Manager

  2. Corrupted Outlook profile

  3. Outdated authentication token

  4. Modern authentication conflicts

  5. Account still using stored credentials

  6. Office updates or system updates changing authentication behavior

Symptoms of the Issue

Users may observe one or more of the following problems:

  • Outlook does not ask for a new password after changing email password.

  • Send/Receive fails repeatedly.

  • Outlook keeps trying to connect to the server.

  • Error messages such as:

    • Authentication failed

    • Cannot connect to server

    • Password incorrect

  • Emails stop syncing.

Solution 1: Remove Stored Password from Windows Credential Manager

This is the most effective solution.

Steps

  1. Close Outlook completely.

  2. Open Control Panel.

  3. Click Credential Manager.

  4. Select Windows Credentials.

  5. Look for credentials related to:

    • Outlook

    • MicrosoftOffice

    • Exchange

    • Office365

    • mail server name

  6. Click each entry and select Remove.

After removing these entries:

  1. Restart Outlook.

  2. Outlook will now prompt for the new password or App Password.

Solution 2: Update Password in Outlook Account Settings

If Outlook still does not ask for credentials, manually update the password.

Steps

  1. Open Control Panel.

  2. Click Mail (Microsoft Outlook).

  3. Select Email Accounts.

  4. Choose the affected account.

  5. Click Change.

  6. Enter the new password or App Password.

  7. Click Next to test account settings.

If the test is successful, the account will start syncing again.

Solution 3: Create a New Outlook Profile

Sometimes the existing profile becomes corrupted.

Steps

  1. Close Outlook.

  2. Open Control Panel.

  3. Select Mail.

  4. Click Show Profiles.

  5. Click Add.

  6. Create a new profile.

  7. Add the email account again using the new password.

Set the new profile as Default Profile and start Outlook.

Solution 4: Clear Office Identity Cache

Authentication tokens stored by Office may also cause login issues.

Steps

  1. Close all Office applications.

  2. Open Run (Windows + R).

  3. Enter:

%localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\IdentityCache

  1. Delete the contents of this folder.

  2. Restart Outlook.

Outlook will request authentication again.

Solution 5: Check Modern Authentication

Modern email services like:

  • Microsoft 365

  • Outlook.com

  • Exchange Online

use Modern Authentication (OAuth) instead of traditional passwords.

In such cases, Outlook will display a login popup window instead of asking for a password in account settings.

If the login popup does not appear, clearing credentials and restarting Outlook usually resolves the problem.

When App Password Is Required

App Passwords are required when:

  • Two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled.

  • The email service does not allow normal passwords for older applications.

  • Legacy authentication methods are used.

Common services requiring App Passwords include:

  • Gmail

  • Some Microsoft accounts with security policies

  • Certain enterprise email systems

Best Practices to Prevent This Issue

To avoid authentication problems in Outlook:

  1. Always restart Outlook after changing passwords.

  2. Clear stored credentials when login issues appear.

  3. Keep Outlook updated to the latest version.

  4. Avoid storing multiple outdated profiles.

  5. Enable Modern Authentication whenever possible.

Conclusion

If Outlook does not ask for a new password after changing email credentials or creating an App Password, the problem is usually related to cached credentials stored in Windows or a corrupted Outlook profile.

Removing saved credentials from Windows Credential Manager or recreating the Outlook profile typically resolves the issue quickly. Understanding how Outlook stores authentication data helps prevent similar problems in the future.
