Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) allows you to access another computer remotely, but many users face difficulties when trying to copy and paste files between the remote session and their local PC. This guide explains step-by-step how to enable and use file copy-paste in RDP.
Before you connect to your remote session:
Press Windows + R, type mstsc, and press Enter.
Click Show Options → Local Resources tab.
Under Local devices and resources, click More....
Check Clipboard (for copy-paste) and Drives (for direct file access).
Connect to your RDP session.
Once connected:
For text or small files, use Ctrl + C (Copy) → Ctrl + V (Paste).
For large files, open This PC in RDP and locate your mapped local drive (e.g., C on MyComputer). Drag-and-drop files between drives.
If you can’t copy-paste:
Restart RDP Clipboard Service: Open Task Manager → End rdpclip.exe → Run it again.
Check Group Policy: Ensure Do not allow clipboard redirection is set to Disabled.
Contact Admin: Sometimes, system administrators block clipboard redirection for security.
If copy-paste is blocked:
Use Cloud Storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox).
Use FTP or SFTP with tools like WinSCP.
Use Email for small files.
Copy-pasting files from an RDP session is easy when clipboard redirection and drive sharing are enabled. By configuring settings before connecting and troubleshooting clipboard issues, you can make file transfers seamless.
