Forgetting the username or password of your Tally.ERP company data can be stressful, especially when you have crucial business entries and financial data stored. Fortunately, there’s a simple, practical workaround to regain access to your Tally.ERP data without losing any records. This guide explains step-by-step how you can safely recover your data using the Company.900 file replacement method.
⚠️ Note: This method works only for Tally.ERP versions (not TallyPrime). Please proceed carefully and always take a data backup before making any changes.
Open Tally.ERP.
Create a new company using the same name and same financial period as your old (password-protected) company.
A new company will be created with a different company number, e.g., 10001 or 10002.
In the new company, create one payment voucher entry (any random amount).
You can select any Sundry Creditor or Debtor.
This entry helps Tally generate a new valid Company.900 file.
Exit from Tally after saving the entry.
This ensures Tally completes file creation for the new company.
Go to your Tally Data Directory, usually found at:
C:\Tally.ERP9\Data
Inside, you’ll see folders with numbers like 10000, 10001, 10002, etc.
Identify your old company folder (the locked one).
Identify your new company folder (the one you just created).
Open the new company’s folder.
Copy the file named Company.900.
Now open the old company’s folder and paste this file there.
When prompted, choose “Yes” to overwrite the existing file.
Restart Tally.ERP.
Open your old company.
You’ll now be able to access your full data without password protection.
If the period shows incorrectly, go to Gateway of Tally → F2: Period, and set your desired period.
You’ve successfully regained access to your Tally.ERP data. Your entire data — ledgers, vouchers, and reports — will now appear exactly as before.
This simple but powerful trick helps recover Tally.ERP data in just a few minutes without the need for third-party tools or data recovery services.
Always keep a backup of your Tally Data folder before making changes.
This method does not work on TallyPrime or cloud-based Tally solutions.
Avoid overwriting data for the wrong company folder — double-check company numbers.
