MX (Mail Exchange) records are DNS entries that direct incoming emails to the correct mail server. When setting up Google Workspace, configuring MX records correctly is essential for ensuring that your domain receives emails through Gmail.
Incorrect MX records can result in emails not being delivered to your Google Workspace inbox.
MX records tell other email servers where to send emails for your domain.
Example:
If someone sends an email to:
user@company.com
The sending server checks the domain's MX records to determine which mail server should receive the message.
When using Google Workspace, you must configure the following MX records:
Priority 1 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
Priority 5 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
Priority 5 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
Priority 10 ALT3.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
Priority 10 ALT4.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM
These servers are operated by Google and handle incoming email traffic.
MX records must be added in your domain DNS settings.
This is usually managed by:
Domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)
Hosting provider
DNS provider (Cloudflare, cPanel DNS)
Access the DNS panel for your domain.
Delete any previous mail server entries.
Add the official Google records listed above.
DNS changes may take 5 minutes to 24 hours to take effect.
You can check MX records using:
DNS lookup tools
Command line utilities
Online MX record checkers
Example command:
nslookup -type=mx company.com
Use only Google MX records when using Workspace
Remove old mail server records
Ensure DNS changes propagate fully
Test email sending and receiving after configuration
MX records are a critical part of Google Workspace email setup. Proper configuration ensures that all incoming emails are delivered to Gmail without interruption.
